Why use safety nets instead of harnesses?

WorkSafe NZ prioritises "collective controls" (like nets) over "personal controls" (like harnesses). Construction safety nets automatically protect everyone in the area, regardless of their actions. 

Harnesses only work if the person is wearing them correctly, using the right lanyard, and is actively clipped on. Nets eliminate that human error factor entirely.

How much clearance do I need below the net?

Building safety nets need space to stretch (deflect) if a person falls into them. Generally, we need roughly 2 to 3 metres of clear space below the net, free of obstacles (such as machinery, pallets, or internal walls). We will assess this clearance during our site visit.

Can I install the nets myself?

No. Installation requires FASET certification to ensure the nets are correctly tensioned and anchored to strong points capable of withstanding significant loads. Incorrect installation can result in the net failing or pulling walls down during a fall.

How often do the nets need to be inspected?

Just like scaffolding, safety nets for construction sites must be visually inspected daily before the site is used, at regular intervals (often weekly), and after bad weather. We check for cuts, debris in the net, or tampering to ensure they remain safe.

Can we continue working if debris falls into the net?

No. If heavy debris (timber, tools, concrete) falls into the net, stop work immediately. Remove the debris carefully and inspect the net for damage before continuing. A loaded net loses its ability to absorb the energy of a second fall and must be checked before anyone works above it again.
